Question
A proton moves with a speed of 4.0
A proton moves with a speed of 4.0 x 107m/s in the directions shown in the figure. A 0.50T magnetic field points in the positive x-direction.(Figure 1) What is the magnitude of the magnetic force in figure (a)? What is the direction of the magnetic force in figure (a)? If the particle is an electron, what is the direction of the magnetic force in figure (a)? What is the magnitude of the magnetic force in figure (b)? What is the direction of the magnetic force in figure (b)? If the particle is an electron, what is the direction of the magnetic force in figure (b)?Explanation / Answer
Here ,
v = 4 *10^7 m.s
B = 0.5 T
Now, in figure a)
Force = q*vB
FOrce = e*4*10^7*0.5
Force = 3.204 *10^-12 N
the magnitude of magnetic force is 3.204 *10^-12 N
NOw , Using right hand screw rule , the direction of force is +z - axis
For an electron , the direction of force is oposite
the direction of force is - z -axis
Now , in figure b)
Force = Force = q*vB
FOrce = e*4*10^7*0.5
Force = 3.204 *10^-12 N
the magnitude of magnetic force is 3.204 *10^-12 N
here , the using right hand screw rule , the direction of force is
between +y and +z axis at theta = 45 degree from y -axis
Now , for an electron , as the direction of force is oposite ,
between -y and -z axis at theta = 45 degree from -y -axis
