Question

For the system of capacitors shown in the figure below, find the following. (Let

C1 = 5.00 ?F

and

C2 = 6.00 ?F.)

(a) the equivalent capacitance of the system

________?F

(b) the charge on each capacitor

(c) the potential difference across each capacitor

on C1 ___________ ?C on C2 ___________ ?C on the 6.00 ?F capacitor__________ ?C on the 2.00 ?F capacitor ________ ?C For the system of capacitors shown in the figure below, find the following. (Let C1 = 5.00 ?F and C2 = 6.00 ?F.) (a) the equivalent capacitance of the system ________?F (b) the charge on each capacitor on C1 ___________ ?C on C2 ___________ ?C on the 6.00 ?F capacitor__________ ?C on the 2.00 ?F capacitor ________ ?C (c) the potential difference across each capacitor across C1 _________ V across C2 ________ V across the 6.00 ?F capacitor _______ V across the 2.00 ?F capacitor ______ V

Explanation / Answer

a)

C1 & 6 are in series

C' = (C1*6)/(C1+6) = 2.73 uF

2 & C2 are in series

C" = (2*C2)/(C2+2) = 1.5 uF

C' & C" are in parllel

Ceq = C' + C" = 4.23 uF

b)

Q tot = Q = Ceq*V = 380.7 uC

Q1 = C'*V = 2.73*90 = 245.7 uC

Q2 = C"*V = 1.5*90 = 135 uC

on 6 uF = Q1 = 245.7 yC

on 2uF = Q2 = 135 uC

c)

across C1 , V1 = Q1/C1 = 49.14 V

across C2 V2 = Q2/C2 = 135/6 = 22.5    V

across the 6.00 ?F=capacitor =V - V1 = 90-49.5 = 40.5 V

across the 2.00 ?F capacitor V - V2 = 90-22.5 = 67.5 V
