Question

Suppose that all young women were channeled into careers as secretaries, nurses, and teachers. At the same time, young men were encouraged to consider these three careers and many others as well.

a. Using graphs, show the combined labor market for secretaries, nurses and teachers. In a separate graph, show labor market for all other fields. In which market is the wage higher? Who receive higher wages on average: men or women?

b. Now suppose that society changed and encouraged both young women and young men to consider a wide range of careers. Over time, what effect would this change have on the wages in the two markets you illustrated in part (a)? What effect would the change have on the average wages of men and women?

Explanation / Answer

a.)

All young women were channeled into careers as secretaries, nurses, and teachers; at the same time, young men were encouraged to consider these three careers and many others as well. This suggests that both men and women will work in labor market for secretaries, nurses, and teachers whereas only men will work in labor market for all other fields. Wage is higher in case of other fields. Men receive higher wages on average as they have a more elastic supply of labor in comparison to women.

b.) Suppose all young women and men were encouraged to consider a wide range of careers, both men and women will work in wide range of careers like secretaries, nurses, teachers and all other fields. Men and women get uniform wages on average
