Suppose that a substance existed for which ge In /OE-08/0E was positive for some re- gion, such as A to B in the plot shown. If the substance, with an energy corresponding to point C on the plot, were brought into thermal contact with a heat reservoir at a very slightly higher temperature, what would happen? At which of the points A, B, C, D, or F, would the substance most likely be after coming to equilibrium with the heat reservoir? Assume both the substance and the reservoir are at a positive absolute tem- perature. Explain clearly. (Notice that heat still flows from hot to cold.)

Explanation / Answer

When point C comes in contact with a heat reservoir which is slightly at a higher temperature than C, the heat will start to flow from reservoir to the region C, as a result of which the temperature of the substance will increase till equilibrium is reached with the reservoir. As reservoir temperature is slightly higher than the substance temperature, the position of C will increase slightly and remain in between the position of A and B.
