Do you agree or disagree with the use of a measure such as the Gross National Happiness for leading a country's political agenda? Why do you agree/disagree?
How was Bhutan's socio-cultural background conducive to implementing something like this?
Finally, do you think that adopting this development measure is a feasible option in other regions of the world (why or why not?)
Explanation / Answer
GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS(GNH) concept defines that sustainable development should take holistic approach towards nations progress and this GNH phrase was first introduced by 4th king of BHUTAN named KING JIGME SINGYE WANGCHUCK in the year 1972. He was the very first person to identify that gross national happiness(GNH) is more important than gross domestic product(GDP).
YES I DO AGREE with the use of measures like gross national happiness because in my opinion GNH is a vision of human development and holistic balanced approach to development of nation.
Four pillars of Gross national happiness(GNH):
1. Sustainable socio-economic development.
2. Conservation of the environment.
3. Preservation and promotion of culture.
4. Good governance.
In the year 2011 BHUTAN revised and updated GNH measures and carried out an analysis in which it categorized people into four groups (unhappy, narrowly happy, extensively happy and deeply happy) which obtained positive results and then Bhutan modified these measures and applied them to advanced economies of the western world. Many countries throughout the world got quickly adopted to gross national happiness(GNH) and still many developing countries need to introduce this which can benefit the government as well as people.
DENMARK ranks first and is happiest country in the world. It stands first in gross national happiness index list by providing free healthcare and free education.
Gross national happiness(GNH) not only consider economic output measures, but they also do include net environmental impacts, spiritual and cultural growth of citizens, mental as well as physical health and political systems. After considering all these benefits I strong recommend INDIA to adopt this particular development measure of Gross national happiness(GNH). To conclude I would like to say that GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS(GNH) IS A GIFT FROM BHUTAN TO THE WORLD.
