Question

Based on the train booth scenario on the next page, give one example of knowledge stored in long term (LT) memory that corresponds to declarative LT, procedural LT, semantic LT, and episodic LT. Note: You should have one example for each of the long term memories, therefore your answer consists of a total of four examples.

Train Booth Scenario: An information booth has been designed for a busy rail station. This is a premium service only available for passengers with a special 'Gold Card" that they insert when they start to use the booth. The booth allows you to find out information about a journey and to print tickets. The booth has four buttons beside the screen: Up/Down scroll buttons for selecting from on-screen list, an OK button mainly used for selection and a Cancel button. Figure TB1- Train Booth Main Screen The main screen has various options (such as holiday offers), but we will focus on journey planning. To do this the user selects 'new journey' from the main screen list (using up/down buttons and OK), then gets a 'Choose destination' screen with letters A-Z on it (initial letter of destination). The user selects the letter (again Up/Down buttons and OK) and then gets to a list of stations starting with the chosen letter from which the destination can be chosen. Cancel in any of these stages takes you back to the main screen. Having chosen a destination you then choose a train time (again Up/Down and OK from a list). You are then shown an itinerary of the journey (showing intermediate stations) from where you can press Cancel to return to the main menu to look at other journey options, or press 'OK' for 'one click' buy and print a ticket (Gold Card holders are always First Class so you don't get to choose a ticket type!).

Explanation / Answer

Long term Memory wher we can store memories for long periods of time has following types:

A. Declarative Memory: The memory of factual information, general knowledge, data and events

Example: 1.First class ticket is for Gold Card holders.

2. Cancel button redirects to main page at any time

3. Up and down button for scrolling on list present on screen

4. Press 'OK' button only if you want to move ahead with your transaction

Following are two subtypes of Declarative Memory:

B. Semantic Memory: Contains general factual information and knowledge related to your word.

Example: 1. If a passenger is having a Gold Card then only he can access the information booth

2. If a passenger is having Gold card then there is no need to choose class for the ticket

3. Complete Iternanry is displayed to passenger once he is done with destination and train time selection

C. Episodic Memory: Consists of our memories of personal experiences and specific events the have happened in the past

Example: 1. On information booth I had inserted my Gold Card and the selected destination by using up and down scrolling button and pressing 'ok' and selected train time and after pressing 'Ok', I got my first class ticket directly

2. Once upon a time on information booth I had inserted my card and then selected destination and in between the process I mispressed 'cancel' button..that time I had beeen redirected to main page and again I had to enter all the details..

D. Procedural Memory: its a non-declarative memory. This is our memory for doing things that require action.

Example: 1: on information booth passenger needs to do following activities:

a. insert a Gold Card

b. select 'new journey'

c. choose destination from list

c.i. use up arrow button to move upwards in a list

c.ii. use down button to move downwords in a list

d. Press 'Ok' or you can press 'cancel' if you want to cancle the transaction

e. choose a relevant train time

e.i. use up arrow button to move upwards in a list

e.ii. use down button to move downwords in a list

f. Press 'OK' or you can press 'cancel' if you want to cancle the transaction

g. all the iternanry you have selected will be displayed to you

h. Now press 'Ok' if you want to continue with the iternary or press 'cancel' if you want to search for different journey.

i. Buy a ticket and print it..
