Question

Optus 4G 8:27 am A soil has the following features. Depth (cm) & Descriptiorn 0-10 Brown (7.5YR 4/4), sandy loam, platy over massive, friable, many roots, pH 5.5, clear to- 10-43 very pale brown (10YR 8/2), sandy loam, massive, very firm, few roots, some manganese nodules, pH 4.5, abrupt to- 43- Yellow (10YR 8/6), heavy clay, very weakly developed angular blocky, hard, roots absent, manganese nodules, pH a) Name the horizons present. 0-10cm 10-43cm 3cm b) Classify the soil using the Australian Soil Classification system. c) Interpret the profile for suitability for plant growth. d) What would be your management suggestion for this soil?

Explanation / Answer

a) 0 to 10 cm = A horizon (top soil)

10-43cm = B1 horizon (sub soil)

43 cm- = B2 horizon (sub soil)

b)

The description indicates that the soil may be classified under the KUROSOLS as the soil have strong texture contrast between the surface (A) horizons and the clay subsoil (B) horizons. The subsoil is strongly acid, i.e. pH is 5.4 or less.

c)

Not suitable for plant growth as the texture contrast restricts the root and water movement. Also, the low pH in the surface soils may cause metal toxicity.

d)

Addition of lime to increase pH may be the best option available but might not be effective in some conditions when since the surface soil may resist the movement.
