Question

Figure 3-7

Bintu’s Production Possibilities Frontier Juba’s Production Possibilities Frontier 8. Refer to Figure 3-7. If the production possibilities frontiers shown are each for 4 hours of work, then which of the following combinations of bowls and cups could Bintu and Juba together not make in a given 4-hour production period? a. 3 bowls and 9.5 cups b. 5 bowls and 4 cups c. 4.5 bowls and 6 cups d. 6 bowls and 1 cups 9. Refer to Figure 3-7. If Bintu and Juba each divides her time equally between making bowls and making cups, then total production is a. 6 bowls and 14 cups. b. 4 bowls and 8 cups. c. 2 bowls and 6 cups. d. 3 bowls and 7 cups.

Can someone please provide an explanation/how to go about this problem? Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

1) Both cannot produce option d, i.e. 6 bowls and 1 cup because their maximum combined output of bowls is 6 when they put all the time in production of bowls. Hence they would produce zero cups in that case.

2) producing cups and bowls for 2hours each, the bowls produced by Bintu is 1 and Juba is 2. Thus total bowls produced is 3. Bintu will produce 4 cups and Juba will produce 3 cups, making it total of 7 cups. Thus the answer is d
