Question

Figure 13.9 presents the annual temperature curves for two cities, A and B, that are located in North America at approximately 37°N latitude. On any date, both cities receive the same intensity and duration of solar radiation. One city is in the center of the continent, whereas the other is on the west coast. Refer to Figure 13.9 to complete the following.

Figure 13.9

Mean monthly temperatures for two North American cities located at approximately 37°N latitude.

5. Which city has the highest monthly mean temperature?

City:

6. Which city has the lowest monthly mean temperature?

City:

7. Which city has the greatest annual temperature range (difference between highest and lowest monthly mean temperatures)?

City:

8. Which city reaches its maximum monthly mean temperature at an earlier date?

City:

9. Which city maintains more uniform temperatures throughout the year?

City:

10. Which city is along the west coast, and which city is in the center of the continent, far from the influence of the ocean? Explain you answer.

West coast city:

Center continent city:

Answers to select from for Question 10.

___ West coast city:

City A

Mid-continent locations often experience a greater annual temperature range and reach their maximum temperatures earlier than coastal locations because of the effect of water along the coast.

D.

Coastal locations often experience a greater annual temperature range and reach their maximum temperatures earlier than mid-continent locations because of the effect of water along the coast.

Explanation / Answer

Here both cities are on the same latitude (37°N), having the same intensity and duration of solar radiation.

Now the primary thing we have to understand is that the city which is near the coast has little change in its temperature during day and night times. Because during day time the temperature of the land area increases very fast than the oceanic part. The hot light air will rise up, and in the same time the heavy relatively cold air from the oceanic part will come and fill the void area of the continental part. In the night same thing happened by the vice-versa process. In this way, there (the city near the ocean coast) will not any significant temperature rise throughout the season due to oceanic influence. But the city in the middle of the continent will not have this benefit. So, there will be huge temperature rise and fall.

So, as per your question,

5) The city in the middle of the continent has the highest monthly mean temperature.

6) The city on the west coast has the lowest monthly mean temperature.

7) The city in the middle of the continent has the greatest annual temperature range ( the difference between highest and lowest monthly mean temperatures).

8) The city on the west coast its maximum monthly mean temperature at an earlier date. (As there are not very rough temperature changes, so mean temperature will reach soon).

9) The city on the west coast maintains more uniform temperatures throughout the year.

10) Explain at the start.
