Citing specific evidence from the American Declaration of Independence (not from the textbook), how was the American Declaration of Independence a product of Enlightenment thought?
Explanation / Answer
All men are created equal,” is but one statement refuting the notion that there should be a class system. The idea that citizens of the 13 colonies should be able to determine their own future is certainly a result of enlightment.
One of the most important ideas in the Declaration of Independence that came straight out of enlightenment thinking was that a ruler was subject to the will of the people. Governments, as the Declaration states, derive their powers from the consent of the governed. When Government becomes destructive, the people have the right to abolish it and establish a new government in order to ensure the safety and happiness of the people.
