Explanation / Answer

Trauma center in US are of two types: designation process and verification process. There are different levels of trauma centers eg I,II, III ,IV, V that depends on the available resources and the number of patients admitted in these centers yearly. Trauma center designation is a process which is on a state or local level. These local authorities define the unique criteria to categorize the levels of trauma centers. These categories are outlined mainly by regulatory and legislative authorities eg state and local municipality.

The trauma center verification is a process to evaluate and improve the trauma care. The process of evaluation is done by the American college of surgeons. It basically evaluates the resources that are necessary for the optimal care of the trauma patients. The process duration is 3 year period. It includes resources, policies, performance improvment, patient care, commitment etc.

Level 1: 24 hours availability of general surgeons and care in various specialities eg. radiology, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, cardiothoraic surgery etc. Most of the level 1 trauma centers are teaching hospitals or campuses. They have a program of research, referral resources for the communities that live in nearby regions, leader in trauma prevention and education.

Level 2: It works in collaboration with the level 1 center. There is 24 hour availability of all essential equipment, specilities and personnel. This does not require and ongoing programme of research.

Level 3: It does not have 24 hour availability of all specialites, but it has resources for emergeny and intensive care for most of the trauma patients. This has a transfer agreement with the level 1 and level 2 which can provide backup resources in case of patients having exceptionally severe injuries.

There are 41 trauma centers in Michigan. Facilities are designated as adult and pediatric trauma centers. There are about 8 level I, 23 level II & 7 level 3 adult trauma centers and about 3 level I, 4 level II pediatric trauma centers in Michigan.
