Question

This paper is about a disease I had to make up but I need help coming up with a short CONCLUSION. Can anyone help with a short maybe 4 or 5 sentence conclusion. (and please feel free to make comments on grammar.

The Disease itself

50 percent of the population is killed off in a few months

Transmitted by airborne pathogens

No known prevention as of right now (present day in the paper)

Does not affect any one group of people everyone can contract it

The cause of this horrific epidemic is caused by the bacterium Bacillus awfulus. It originated from the livestock disease anthrax (Bacillus anthracis), this bacterial species does not spread disease by initial infection but rather inhalation of its spores. The spores can easily reach the lungs where they have access to the lymph nodes and transform into active bacteria. When the bacteria propagate in the lymph and bloodstream they release lethal toxins which rupture blood vessels and destroy tissue. Bacillus awfulus resulted from Bacillus anthracis adapting to treatments used to save livestock. Originally humans were unlikely to contract this disease but with the strain growing more resistant to treatment and adapting to survive it is now extremely contagious and lethal to human beings in addition to livestock.

The critical difference between anthrax and Bacillus awfulus is that once a person is infected with B. awfulus spores they become contagious. Infected individuals will cough up these spores back into the air, creating an airborne disease. This is what helped B. awfulus wipe out half of the population, because it is so incredibly contagious.

The disease caused by Bacillus awfulus has been colloquially called “the hack” because of the uncontrollable coughing associated with initial infection. Other early symptoms include fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath. If left without treatment, the infected individual will cough up blood and experience internal hemorrhaging, leading to death. It takes between 5-10 days for the disease to start showing symptoms in a person. Because of this, people may be spreading the disease without even knowing that they have it.

When the disease began spreading, entire towns went into chaos. The government had lost all control. Before it had been discovered that the disease was airborne, local governments had put into place a curfew and closed all schools. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, had been in contact with the disease while walking the streets of New York City. He died within days and the Vice President, Mike Pence, was the new president. He ordered the quarantine of every town in the United States. With this, trade was cut off from the World. Other countries had already broken their ties with the United States due to some misunderstandings with late President Trump. No one wanted to send money, food, or healthcare to the United States due to the previous president’s relationship with foreign countries. Once the CDC released their report that the disease was airborne, local governments closed any public places and all businesses. From this, it was left up to President Pence to try and fix this madness and try to clean up the air in order to prevent more exposure. People were dying rampantly due to the lack of funding to medical research. No one was discovering any cure at the time of infection.

Within this time People were afraid to leave their homes and believed that this was the apocalypse. The churches, synagogues, and other places of worship were raided due to the assumption that Bacillus awfulus was a curse sent from God. Once the loss of religion occurred, citizens of the nation began to steal from the stores that had been closed due to the quarantine. Weapons were used by citizens to kill their neighbors and friends if they thought that the person had been infected with the disease. Along with mass killings, since all businesses were closed in order to try to control the rapid spread of the disease, citizens were without a source of income or a way to access their funds since banks were closed, there was no sense of legal system present, or a moral sense of what is right or wrong. People were stealing and breaking into businesses and other homes in order to try and obtain things they needed. People were also desperate for a cure so a lot of pharmacies were robbed or protested because people thought they were withholding vaccines or treatments even though they were not.

During this time there was no sense of social class structure.   It did not matter if people were previously higher class or lower class all populations were affected. Just like in most past epidemics, people in poverty were more likely to be exposed simply because of the close proximity to others and low sanitation. These are prime conditions for the bacteria to spread since it is so contagious, in homeless shelters it could spread rapidly from person to person. So more people in the lower class were exposed because of these poor living conditions. Some higher/middle class people chose to hide away in their homes in order to avoid contracting the disease, where they faced the possibility of being robbed or killed by other citizens.

During this epidemic, morale of the population was very low. No one was safe from contracting this disease and the government had not yet figured out a way to contain it. People were afraid for their lives, of other people in their communities going mad and corrupt, easily being exposed to the disease and likely after, death. People felt so desperate during this time that most lost all sense of morals. People believed the world was going to end and it was because God had cursed them. Since religious faith and overall morale of the population was so low, this had a significant impact on the art and literature created during this time. Prior to the epidemic, art and literature were very diverse and expressive, but all sense of hope and happiness was destroyed from this epidemic. Just like in the 1300’s when the black death had spread throughout Europe, fear and death had controlled people’s lives for so long. After so much death had occurred there was no sense of hope in the fate of humanity so the art and literature became very dark and hopeless. A lot of the artists who created artwork during this time were very sad from so much death and corruption around them that they created very dark and twisted pieces to express their feelings. A lot of art pieces during this time had death as the main focus, or God coming for the final destruction of the world. Many people also wrote journals, poems, and stories about the mass chaos they saw during this time and how God had cursed them for the mass sins in the world and sent an apocalypse upon them. People were in a stage of mourning and used art and literature to express this to others.

With this epidemic underway, there had to be a change in technology in order to prevent this disease from spreading further than it already has. Since most people were confused as to how this disease came about, researchers took matters into their own hands to figure out what was going on. In order to control communicable diseases, certain diagnostic methods are being established. Some of these methods focus on the polymerase chain reaction which helps to identify different pathogen sequences. This new technology helped to understand more about Bacillus awfulus, however not how to cure the infection. Due to the rapid spread of this disease, it is important for researchers to educate the population on how to prevent further spreading of this disease, since there is no known cure.

When the first few cases of the hack were contracted, these infected individuals went to the immediate care centers and hospitals to try and figure out what was wrong. Doctors often mis diagnosed the disease, or were stumped by the lab results and the unfamiliar symptoms. Because of the close interactions between patients and doctors and the lack of knowledge of the disease and how it was spread, many medical professionals were quickly infected thus resulting in death. The first main wave of the disease took the lives of many medical professionals because of how close they were to the patients who had already contracted the bacteria. Shortly after the first wave of the epidemic, Bacillus awfulus wiped out fifty percent of the entire population. Hospitals grew scarce and eventually were abandoned. The population was much too afraid to leave their own homes, let alone to go attempt to get medical help. Scientists at the time were only beginning to understand the virus. No known cures were created or even ways to help prevent the spread of disease besides quarantine. Even if there were a cure that was found and created, it is still unknown as to how it would reach the rest of the population. Those who weren’t sick could administer it, however they wouldn’t want to come into contact with those infected because of how contagious the bacterial disease is. There were many medical changes that occurred during this time, the biggest one being the almost disappearance of the entire health care system itself.

Explanation / Answer

A dreadful disease transmitted by airborne pathogens has killed almost 50 percent of the US population in a few months. This has no know cure as of now. No one was is from contracting this disease and the government had not yet figured out a way to contain it.  People are afraid for their lives that if they stepped outside they would be exposed to the disease and likely die. Most lost all sense of morals and believed the world was going to end and it was because God had cursed them.
