Turned in on time Header for all pages Format Data, observations, procedure Calculations Conclusions Post lab Questions TA signature Benzene and biphenyl are often produced as side products during Grignard reactions using phenyImagnesium bromide. How can their formations be explained? Give balanced equations for their formation. Why do you mix the oily solid with petroleum ether? Provide the product and mechanism for the addition of CO_2 (O=C=O) to phenyl magnesium bromide followed by hydrolysis. Provide starting alkyl halides and carbonyl compounds for preparing the following compounds by the Grignard method:Explanation / Answer
1. a. The phenyl free radical can either accept another electron and form a carbanion or combine with another free radical to form biphenyl b. Moisture in the glass ware can result in the formation of benzene.
2. Addition of solid petroleum ether is called trituration. It is a method of purification where pet.ether is added and then drawn out with a pipet. The process of addition of pet.ether is continued till the oily substance obtained becomes a solid that can be filtered.
3. See image submitted
4.a.propanal + ethyl magnesium bromide b.pentanone+methyl magnesium bromide c.carbon dioxide and butyl magnesium bromide d, phenyl magnesium bromide and butanal.
