Question

Figure 16.2: Setup for a Galvanic Cell Focus Questions: 1) What are the cell potentials for the three galvanic cells? 2) Do the experimental values match the theoretical values? Experimental Procedure: 1. Using sand paper, clean each metallic electrode (Cu, Fe, and Zn). Wash it with deionized water, and wipe it dry. 2. Assemble a Zn/Cu cell as shown in figure 10.2. 3. Set the voltmeter on 2 y and measure the cell potential. If the voltage is negative reverse the wire connections. Record the voltage to 3 decimal places. 4. In the same way, construct the following two cells, and measure their cell potentials. Fe(s) Fe2 (aq, 1M)ll Cu2 (aq, 1M)ICu(s) Zn(s)IZn2 (aq, 1M)ll Fe2 (aq, 1M)lFe(s) 5. Calculate the theoretical cell potentials for these three cells, and compare the values with the experimental ones. Experiment 16

Explanation / Answer

(1) E0Zn2+/Zn = - 0.76 V , E0Cu2+/Cu = + 0.34 V

E0cell = 0.34 - ( - 0.76 ) = _+1.10 V

(2)

E0Fe2+/Fe = - 0.45 V , E0Cu2+/Cu = + 0.34 V

E0cell = 0.34 - ( - 0.45 ) = + 0.79 V

(3)

E0Zn2+/Zn = - 0.76 V , E0Cu2+/Cu = - 0.45 V

E0cell = - 0.45 - ( - 0.76 ) = + 0.31 V
