Question
It, at a particular temperature the average speed of CH_4 molecules is 1000 mi/hr. What would be the average speed of CO_2 molecules at the same temperature expressed in miles per hour? It takes 30 mL of argon 40 s to effuse through a porous barrier. The same volume of vapor of a volatile compound extracted from Caribbean sponges takes 120 s to effuse through the same barrier under the same conditions. What is the molar mass of the compound? In an experiment to determine the molar mass of a newly synthesized chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gas for use in a refrigeration system, it was found that 25 mL of the gas effused through a porous barrier in 65 s. The same volume of argon effused in 38 s under the same conditions. What is the molar mass of the CFC?Explanation / Answer
a) average velocity of CH4 = 1000 mi/h
So,
average speed of CO2 at same temperature = 1000(sq.rt.(16 x 10^-3/44 x10^-3))
= 603.022 mi/hr
b) average speed of diffusion of Agron = 30 ml/40 s = 0.75 ml/s
unknown volatile compound = 30 ml/120 s = 0.25 ml/s
molar mass of unknown = ((0.75/0.25)^2) x 39.95 g/mol = 359.55 g/mol
c) Average speed of CFC = 25 ml/65 s = 0.38 ml/s
Average speed of argon = 25 ml/38 s = 0.66 ml/s
Molar mass of CFC = 39.95 x (0.66/0.38)^2 = 120.73 g/mol
