Question
An unknown white solid consists of two compounds, represented as AB and XY One of the compounds. AB. dissolves in water, while the other. XY, does not. (Figure 2) The solution containing AB was treated with KOH(aq). yielding a white precipitate The water insoluble compound. XY. dissolved in HCl(aq) with the evolution of carbon dioxide gas The resulting solution was then treated with (NH_4)_2 SO_4 (aq). yielding a second white precipitate Identify A, X and Y in the unknown compounds AB and XY. If a substance cannot be classified as A, X. or Y. classify it as "Other ". Drag the appropriate items to their respective bins.Explanation / Answer
AB --> soluble in water
XY --> not soluble
so..
XY + HCl --> CO2 gas... so Y must be CO3-2 ion
if it is NOT soluble in water... it must be::
BaCO3, MgCO3 ...since MgSO4 is soluble, and BaSO4 is not, this must be Ba
X = Ba+2
Y = CO3-2
for..
AB --> NH4(B) + KOH = white precipitate, can't be NH4
so..
it should be MgSO4 ... since it is soluble, ang MgSO4 + KOH = Mg(OH)2 hwich is white
all other speice smust be added in "other"
