Question
An unknown white solid consists of two compounds. As suggested in the illustration, (Figure 2)part of the unknown mixture dissolved while the rest is insoluble in water. The solution with the dissolved unknown is treated with KOH(aq) and yields a white precipitate. The remaining part of the original solid that was insoluble in water dissolves in HCl(aq) with the evolution of a gas. The resulting solution is then treated with (NH4)2SO4(aq) and yields a second white precipitate.
Let the soluble compound in the unknown be represented by AB and the insoluble compound in the unknown be represented by XY.
Identify A, X, and Y in the unknown compounds AB and XY. If a substance cannot be classified as A, X, or Y, classify it as "Other."
1) Mg^2+
2) OH^-
3) Cu^2+
4) Ba^2+
5)PO4^3-
6)CO3^2-
7) Na^+
8)SO4^2-
9)NH4^+
List each one one as A,X,Y, or Other.
Explanation / Answer
If you use the hints, it will walk you through the answer, and tell you why
The unknown solid is Mg^2+ (your A) mixed with Ba^2+CO3^2- (your XY).
Everything else is "other".
