Question
Based on the following observations for 3 metals (X and Y) and solutions of metal cations (Y + and Z + ), rank the metals (X, Y and Z) in terms of reducing agent strength, from lowest to highest.
? When metal X is placed in an aqueous solution of Z + , a dark residue forms on the metal.
? When metal Y is placed in an aqueous solution of Z + , the metal’s appearance does not change.
? When metal X is placed in an aqueous solution of Y + , a dark residue forms on the metal.
Weakest RA Strongest RA
__________ < __________ < __________
Explanation / Answer
X ----> X+ + 1e-
As X is placedin aqueus solution of Z+ we get dark residue, it means metal X loses electrons and get oxidised.Hence it is an reducing agent.
As metal Y is placed in aqueous solution of Z+ thereis no change in color of metal, it means metal Z is stronger than Y and Y does not gets oxidised in presence of Z+
when metal X is placed in Y+ aqueous solution we get the dark residue,it means X gets oxidised again.
Therefore order of weakest to strongest reducing agent is
Y< Z< X
Therefore, X is the strongest reducing agent ,then comes Z and least is Y
