Question
Pre-lab Questions 1 A general rule for solubility is "like dissolves like" which means that ionic and polar substances dissolve in polar solvents and nonpolar substances dissolve in nonpolar solvents. Using the above rule answer the questions below: (A)Do you expect potassium iodide to be soluble in cyclohexane? Give reason(s) for your answer. (B) Do you expect iodine to be soluble in water? Give reason(s) for your answer. Carbon tetrachloride is a liquid at room temperature. Draw the Lewis structure of this compound. Do you expect this compound to be a polar or a nonpolar solvent? 2.Explanation / Answer
1.
A. KI is insoluble in hexane. Because KI is ionic compound but hexane is non polar compound
B. I2 is insolublein water because I2 is non polar compound where as water is polar compound.
2.
CCl4 is non polar compound.
CCl4 is in tetrahedral geometry. And all the four Cl atoms full bond pair of electrons towards themselves at the croners of tetrahedron and hence exerts a net effect zero.
4.
(a)
Na2SO4 (aq.) --------------> 2 Na+ (aq.) + SO42- (aq.)
(b)
BaCl2 (aq.) -------------> Ba2+ (aq.) + 2 Cl- (aq.)
(c)
(NH4)2CO3 (aq.) --------------> 2 NH4+ (aq.) + CO32- (aq.)
(d)
Ca(NO3)2 (aq.) ---------------> Ca2+ (aq.) + 2 NO3- (aq.)
(e)
HNO3 (aq.) -----------------> H+ (aq.) + NO3- (aq.)
