1) The calculated mL CO2/g Alka-Seltzer is 93% while the reported value is 59.0%. The calculated mL CO2/g Rolaids is 47% while the reported value is 38.6%. Both the calculated values are higher than the reported values, the value for Alka-Seltzer being grossly off. The decompositions or acid reactions of Alka-Seltzer and Rolaids produce CO2 which are collected by the displacement of water. The possible reason for the higher values are that the test tubes used to collect the gaseous CO2 weren’t completely dry and contained moisture. Hence, both CO2 and moisture added up to give the volume by the displacement of water. This calculated volume was definitely higher than the true value of the volume of CO2 collected. Hence, a higher volume of CO2 and thus, a higher value of the percentages of CO2 in the antacid tablets were reported.
2) The decomposition of Alka-Setzer must be carried out in a dry test tube. This is due to the fact that we wish to calculate the accurate volume of CO2 produced from AlkaSeltzer. If moisture is present in the test tube, CO2 will dissolve in water forming aqueous carbonic acid (H2CO3). Therefore, some of the CO2 is lost and hence, a lower volume will be recorded, giving erroneous results.
3) Solid Rolaids tablets contain two active ingredients, both of which can function against heart burns. Rolaids contain CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2, both of which are effective against neutralizing stomach acid. Moreover, the CO2 is easily released as gas while the water produced from the neutralization reactions can dilute the stomach acid and be excreted out of the body.
4) CO2 dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, a weak acid, soluble in water. Hence, some of the CO2 is lost and thus, the recorded volume of CO2 (by displacement of water) is lower than the actual volume of CO2 generated. Consequently, the calculated value of mL CO2/g Alka-Seltzer will be lower than the actual value reported in the tablet.
