Explanation / Answer

Im using thermodynamic values from a chemistry book.

NaCl (s) = 72.38 J / mol K

H2O (l) = 69.91 J / mol K

HCl (g) = 186.77

NaOH (aq) = 64.4

ENtropy = Entropy of productss - Entropy of reactants

Entropy = 72.38 + 69.91 - (186.77 + 64.44) = -108.92 J / K

b)

Na (s) = 51.46 J / mol K

H2O = 69.91

NaOH = 64.4

H2 = 130.59

ENtropy = Entropy of productss - Entropy of reactants

Entropy = 2*64.44 + 130.59 - (2*51.46 + 2*69.91) = 16.73 J / K

c)

Al (s) = 28.32

O2 (g) = 205.03

Al2O3 = 51

Entropy = Entropy of products - Entropy of reactants

ENtropy = 2*51 - (4*28.32 + 3*205.03) = -626.37 J / K

d)

Mg(OH)2 = 63.17

HCl (g) = 186.77

MgCl2 (s) = 89.62

H2O (l) = 69.91

Entropy = Entropy of products - Entropy of reactants

= 89.62 + 2*69.91 - (63.17 + 2*186.77) = -207.27 J / K

entropy of gases is higher than that of liquids and solids so

if there are more moles of gases on the products side than the reactants side then you can expect to have a positive entropy change

it will be negative if reactants have more gas moles

if products contain more moles of solid than the reactants then you can expect to have a negative entropy change since entropy of solids is smaller than that of liquids and gases.

right answer is B
