4. Balance the following chemical reactions and then classify each according to reaction type (i.e.: synthesis, decomposition, single/double displacement, etc.) (10 Marks) Type: Type: Type: Type: b)AsClH2Sa)AsS) 5. Calculate the number of atoms of the following of 0.543 mol of hydrogen gas, Ha) (4 marks) 6. Zinc and Sulphur react to form zinc sulphide according to the following balanced equation If 4.00 grams of zinc and 7.00 grams of sulphur are available for the reaction, determine: a) The limiting reactant.(5 marks) b) The mass of zinc sulphide produced. (5 marks) Page T

Explanation / Answer

4.

a) 2Mg + O2 -----> 2MgO. It is a synthesis as MgO is made from its constituents.

b) 2AsCl3 + 3H2S -----> As2S3 + 6HCl. This is a double displacement reaction as both sulphide and chloride ions are interchanged between proton and arsenous ion.

c) 2HCl + Fe2S -----> FeCl2 + H2S. This is also a double displacement reaction.

d) 2KClO3 -----> 2KCl + 3O2. This is a decomposition reaction as the reactant disintegrates into its starting materials - KCl and oxygen.

e) C2H2 + O2 -----> CO2 + H2O. This is also a decomposition reaction, in fact a combustion reaction where the ethylene hydrocarbon is burnt to give its constituent atoms in their oxide forms.
