Procedure A demonstration of the steps will be given by the instructor. You can take pictures during the lab for the lab report 1. On top of paper towels, use steel wool to clean a Cu and Ni electrode Use tweezers to handle the alumina membrane on the polypropylene support ring. Any pressure on the alumina will cause it to crack. 2. Polypropylene support ring (hold with tweezers here) Porous alumina membrane Option 1. Place the membrane on a paper towel. Apply pressure to the support ring with the tweezers and gently paint the most of the alumina membrane surface with a thin layer of Galn using a Q-tip Option 2. Consult the instructor. 3. Use tweezers to place the Galn-coated membrane metal side down on the copper electrode The uncoated side of the membrane faces out into the Ni solution. 4. Cut up strips of electrical tape. Use the minimum number of strips to cover the membrane support ring and the face of the copper electrode. Do not tape the alumina membrane. Cover the edges and back of the copper electrode with Copper electrode (diamond pattern) with membrane (grey) taped electrical tape.2 Have (black - electrical tape) on. The back of the electrode is taped as the instructor check your Cu electrode well

Explanation / Answer

a) Nanowires are the most promising nano structures with potential applications in the field of renewable energy devices, sensors and even it has good antimicrobial activity too.

Template synthesis, sputtering and self assembly methods are the most important synthesis techniques. By using template synthesis, Ni nanowires with desired length and diameter can be obtained.

Possible mechanism for the synthesis of Ni nanowires is

i) When Ni formate is dissolved in ethylene glycol,the formation of nickel formate solvated by ethylene molecules occures.

ii) When hydrazene hydrate is added to the solution ,ethylene glycol legands are exchanged for N2H4 legands resulting in the formation of a more stable complex between nickel formate and hydrazene hydrate.

iii) This complex is precipitated from the solution at around above 100oC. The colour change of the solution from cofirms its formation.

Ni(HCOO)2 .2H2O + nHOCH2CH2OH == [Ni(HOCH2CH2OH)n ] (HCOO)2 + H2O

[Ni(HOCH2CH2OH)n ] (HCOO)2 +mN2H4 ==Ni( N2H4)m (HCOO)2 + nHOCH2CH2 OH

Thus the complex Ni( N2H4)m (HCOO)2 formed is used as the precursor for Ni nanoparticles.The Ni nanoparticles are reduced by hydrazene.

Nanoparticles with magnetic properties can spontaneously align for chain structures.So Ni nanowires with 1D structrure are formed.

b)The diameter of the nanowire structure is in the order of 10-9 meters.Like all other nanowires,the standard aspect ratio of Ni nanowire is 3-5.By inhaling Ni nanomaterials, it may deposite in all regeons of the resperatory tract. The deposited nanowires in the nose travel along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb.It may affect other brain regions even.

c) Magnetic nanomaterials are those which can be manipulated by magnetic field. Magnetic nanomaterials have two parts.One is a magnetic material like Fe, Ni and Co.The part is a chemical componant which has functionality.

Eg:- Iron Oxide

d) This procedure cannot be limited for the synthesis for Ni nanowires. Other metal nanowires can also be prepared by template method as it is the most efficient synthesis method for nanowires.
