Question
It has been claimed that geological and meteorological events have influenced ecosystem change on Earth. a) Explain how biogeography and continental drift provide evidence of ecosystem change over time. (3 points) b) Explain how the meteor impact that led to extinction of the dinosaurs is another historical event that provides evidence of ecosystem change over time. (3 points) c) Consider that the climate changes we are experiencing now could become more extreme. Predict the influence of such extremes on ecosystems in the future. (3 points)
Explanation / Answer
A- continental drift significantly affect the ecosystem. continental drift especially affects all earthquake volcano and mountain ranges formation. Best examples - Himalayan region in India. Some climatic change also appear due to continental drift for example change of ocean current, weather, temperature and wind flow. All these factor change the ecology of continent and significantly seffect on flora and fauna of the region.
One example seen in case of marsupials . marsupials only present in Australia because Australia separated from the other land mass before the development of predators on land mass. So Predator did effect on marsupial in Australia.
2- according to the theory of extinction of Dinosaurs. Large meteor impact on earth and release large amount of energy, cloud of dust gases sulphur dioxide and radioactive chemicals. All these product of meteor impact widely effect on the flora and fauna on earth.
Meteor impact ----> cloud of dust, gases and other chemicals ---> extreme change in climate condition----> extensive loss of plant and other food sources ---> extensive loss in the number of herbivorous dinosaur due to hunger ---> after loss of herbivorous Dinosaur the number of carnivorous Dinosaurs also decreases ----> dinosaurs are where very large in size and their food requirement is also very high. This demand was not fulfilled due to loss of flora. So the Meteor impact may be the major cause of the extinction of dinosaurs.
3- one of the important extreme of future is global warming. Global warming causes climatic change, melting of icebergs, polar ice and causes the increase of sea level. The climatic changes may cause excessive flooding, heavy rainfall and Tsunami. Increase of sea level decreases the land mass area and extensively effect on ecology. 1 theory also support that the global warming me cause ice age. So we can say that the global warming significantly effect on the number of flora and fauna of Earth.
