Question
Toxicology problem, please help, thank you Consider the following scenario A "safe" pain relief medication is available to the general public. After a number of 10 years, it is suggested that this drug may have an adverse effect on the nervous system of young children. First, how might you determine if the medication affected children? Second, speculate as to what factors you might have to address that may not have been during the initial testing of the drug. In developing safe levels of chemicals for humans, very often safety factors are used. Explain how these factors may establish safe exposure levels and why they are used.Explanation / Answer
On developing safe levels of drugs some factors are ised.
These factors are therapeutic index.
It is defined as the ratio of toxic dose for 50% of population to minimum effective dose for 50% of population.
The drug with high therapeutic index is freffered over narrow therapeutic index.
A drug with narrow therapeutic index mean there is little difference between effective dose and toxic dose.so these drug are avoided.
From studies from clinical trials the toxic doses amd effective doses are known.
The adverse effects of the above pain killer is accessed by clinicla trials on patients.
Then therapeutic index of the drug is calculated of the drug is feasible then used.
