Experiment 12 Report Sheet Emission Spectroa Date- lob Sec, Nome A. Emission Spectra of gases 1. Description of the emission spectrum of the hydrogen gas tube Color of Hydrogen discharge tube emission: Observations Through Spectroscope (describe the spectrum): Wavelength, nm 656 486 434 410 Scale Reading Color red-orange blue-green indigo violet 2. Description of the emission spectrum of the helium gas tube Color of Helium discharge tube emission Observations Through Spectroscope: Color Scale Reading Wavelength, nm 2. 3. 5. 6.

Explanation / Answer

When an electric current is passed through a glass tube that contains hydrogen gas at low pressure the tube gives off blue light. When this light is passed through a prism, four narrow bands of bright light are observed against a black background.

The hydrogen spectrum is complex, comprising more than the three lines visible to the naked eye. It is possible to detect patterns of lines in both the ultraviolet and infrared regions of the spectrum as well. These fall into a number of "series" of lines named after the person who discovered them.

1) Lyman Series: It is in UV region . Lines grow closer and closer as the frequency increases . Eventually they move so closer that it appear as a continuous spectrum rather tahn a series of lines.

2) Balmer and Paschen series : Pattern is the same , but it is more compact.
