Question
I am studying to exam and will appreciate answers and explanations to answers so I can understand what is going on :))) thank you! Example: The reaction N2 (g) + 3 H2 (g) 2 NH3 (g) What happens (at a fixed temperature) when we: Double the volume? What happens to Kp when equilibrium is re-established? Reduce the volume by half? What happens to Kp when equilibrium is re-established? What if we keep the volume the same, but we increase the pressure by adding Argon gas? (which does not react in this reaction) 29Explanation / Answer
N2(g) + 3H2(g) <----> 2NH3(g)
a) if volume double, the pressure decreases.so that equilibrium
shifts towards left.therefore N2,H2 pressure increases , NH3 decreases. results
decrease in kp .
b) if volume half, the pressure increases.so that equilibrium
shifts towards right.therefore N2,H2 pressure decreaes, NH3 increases. results
increase in kp .
c) if pressure increases , equilibrium shifts towards less no of mol side (product NH3).
SO that Kp increases
