how to identify polar or nonpolar molecules from the molecular formulas

how to determine what type of hybrid orbitals are used by the central atom in a given molecule

how to determine the number of pi or sigma bonds in a given molecule

how to describe a molecules geometry using the VSEPR theory

how to use bond energies to predict the enthalpy of a reaction

how to classify a bond as ionic, polar covalent or nonpolar covalent

how to determine the formal charge on the central atom in a molecule

how to tell whether a species will be diamagnetic or paramagnetic

how to tell the boiling points of a compound

Explanation / Answer

Polar and non polar molecules can be identified by many ways. If there is net dipole moment in the molecule, the molecule will ne polar. If the dipole moment is zero, the molecule will be non polar. Also polarity can be identified on the basis of the electronegativity difference between the atoms in the molecule.

The type of hybrid orbitals used by the central atom in a given molecule can be identified from the lewis structure of the molecule. With the help of lewis structure of the molecule, we can easily identify the shape of the, molecule and with the help of shape we can find the corrresponding hybridization of the molecule and thus the hybrid orbitals used by the central atom in a given molecule can be identified.
