Question

This is an owl question so there are 3 parts :(

Part 1

A solution contains 9.25×10-3 M aluminum nitrate and 5.90×10-3 M copper(II) acetate.
Solid sodium hydroxide is added slowly to this mixture.

A. What is the formula of the substance that precipitates first?

B. What is the concentration of hydroxide ion when this precipitation first begins?
[OH-] =  M

Part 2

A solution contains 1.29×10-2 M iron(II) acetate and 9.60×10-3 M manganese(II) nitrate.
Solid potassium hydroxide is added slowly to this mixture.

A. What is the formula of the substance that precipitates first?

B. What is the concentration of hydroxide ion when this precipitation first begins?
[OH-] =  M

Part 3

A solution contains 1.02×10-2 M ammonium carbonate and 5.02×10-3 M potassium phosphate.
Solid silver nitrate is added slowly to this mixture.

A. What is the formula of the substance that precipitates first?

B. What is the concentration of silver ion when this precipitation first begins?
[Ag+] =  M

Explanation / Answer

Part 1)

Al(OH)3 , Ksp = 4.6 x 10^-33

Cu(OH)2 , Ksp = 1.1 x 10^-15

Al(OH)3 Ksp < Ca (OH)2 . so Al(OH)3 precipitate first

A.)

the formula of the substance that precipitates first = Al(OH)3

B)

Al(OH)3 ----------------> Al+3 + 3OH-

Ksp = [Al+3] [OH-]^3

4.6 x 10^-33 = 9.25 x 10^-3 x  [OH-]^3

[OH-] = 7.92 x 10^-11 M

concentration of hydroxide ion = [OH-] = 7.92 x 10^-11 M

part 2 )

Fe(OH)2 , Ksp = 4.87 x 10^-17

Mn (OH)2 , Ksp = 2.0 x 10^-13

Ksp of Fe(OH)2 < Ksp of Mn (OH)2

so Fe(OH)2 precipitate first .

A)   Fe(OH)2 precipitate first .

B)

Fe(OH)2 --------------> Fe+2 + 2OH-

Ksp = [Fe+2] [OH-]^2

4.87 x 10^-17 = 1.29 x 10^-2 x  [OH-]^2

[OH-] = 6.14 x 10^-8 M
