Question
This is an sample problem in stewart's early transcendentals which precceds the practice problems in 10.2.A 100 lb wt. hangs from 2 wires. Find tensions (T1and T2.)and their magnitudes. Angles between t1 and ceiling is 50deg, angle between t2 and ceiling is 32deg Problem initially set up as -t1=|t1|cos 50i+|t2|sin 50 jand t2=|t2|cos 32i +|t2|sin 32j. They work the problem out and get that |t1| =85.4 lbs (mag) and |t2| =64.91lbsmagnitude. The end of the example states T1=-55.05i + 65.60j and t2=55.05 + 34.40 j.I was able to follow how they got these numbers-how to do the math is not what i'm confused about. Here's my question-what do the numbers T1 And T2 mean? I know |t1| and |t2| are magnitudes of each wire but had they worked out the last equations they left off with T1 would have equaled 10.55and t2 would have equaled 89.45. Do these numbers have any signifigance and are they useful in any real life application?
