Question

How does the pressure representation to the pressure represented by 1 mm Hg? See table In which container illustrated In Figure 12.6 are the gas moving faster? Assume both gases to be hydrogen. In Figure 12.7, what gas pressure corresponds to a volume How do the data illustrated in Figure 12.7 verify Boyle's What effect would you observe in Figure 12.10 if T_2 than T_1? Explain how the reaction N_2(g) + O_2(g) rightarrow 2 NO(g) proves that nitrogen and oxygen are diatomic molecule What is the reason for comparing gases to STP? What are the four parameters used to describe the behave

Explanation / Answer

The reaction shows that one volume of nitrogen combines with one volume of Oxygen to give two volume of NO. Hence, it can be concluded that NO must have one atom of nitrogen and oxygen each (Since, N+O => NO). Now since one volume of oxygen and nitrogen react to form two volume of NO, and if O and N were monovalent, only one volume of NO must have formed, but this is not the case. We get two volumes of NO. The only explanation is that both nitrogen and oxygen are divalent. This is a direct consequence of avogadro's hypothesis.
