POST-LAB QUESTIONS: 1) Explain in your own words the purpose of each of the following steps that were performed while extracting the spinach leaves a) Cutting and grinding the leaves. The purpose of cutting and grinding leaves was to make it into small particles, so it can be dissolved in cold acetone. b) The organic extracts are dried before being spotted on the TLC plate. Can the appearance of a single spot with an Re value 0.55 on a TLC plate prove that the compound responsible for it, is pure? How else can the purity of the sample be verified? 2)Explanation / Answer
a) To cut and grind the leaves allows us to dissolve the material easily in the solvent.
b) The organic extract may contain small amounts of water in it. This is thus dried using dehdyrating agent to get rid of water prior to running the tlc.
c) A single spot appearing on tlc does not necessarily prove the material is pure. It might indicate that the developing agent used for identifying the spots might not be appropriate for all the other components of the mixture. We must employ other developing agents simultaneouly to confirm how many components are present in the sample by tlc.
