Upon physical examination, the physician finds that the patient's spleen is enlarged. The patient reports no history of blunt contact to the abdomen that would cause such enlargement. The physician orders laboratory work. The most striking results are anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. The results also indicate that lymphocytes with abnormal morphology are within the peripheral blood. The lymphocytes are identified as having cytoplasmic projections.
