Question

The study of the kinetics of real systems can be complicated.For example, there are several ways which O_3 can be converted to O_2. One such reaction is NO_2 + O_3 rightarrow NO_3 + O_2 Determine the rate law and rate constant for this reaction. In a copper plating experiment in which copper metal is deposited from a copper (II) ion solution, the system is run for 2.6 hours at a current of 12.0 A. What mass of copper is deposited? (F = 96. 485 C/mol). Cu^2+ (aq) + 2e^- rightarrow Cu (s) 9. Express the following reaction using galvanic cell notation 3 Pb(s) + 2 Au^3+ (aq) rightarrow 2 Au (s) + 3Pb^21+ (aq) 10. Compute the binding energy of the N nuclcous, which has an experimental mass of 14.003074 u. Mass of Proton = 1.007825 u. Mass of Neutron + 1.0086654 u)

Explanation / Answer

8)

Mass of copper m = ?

Molar mass of copper M = 63.5 g/mol

time t = 2.6 h = 2.6 x 60 x 60 s

current c = 12 A

valancy of copper z = +2

From Faraday's 1st law,

m = Mct/zF where F = Faraday constant

Substitute all the values,

m = (63.5 g/mol) (12 A) (2.6 x 60 x 60 s )/ (2) (96485 C/mol)

= 36.96 g

m = 36.96 grams

Therefore,

mass of copper deposited = 36.96 grams
