PLEASE HELP CHEMISTRY HOMEWORK DUE TODAY
(1). If the intermolecular forces between molecules of a substance were very small, what effect would you expect this to have on the boiling point and vapor pressure of the substance? What properties would you look for in a molecule in order to have a low boiling point and high vapor pressure? Should the atoms of the molecules be larger or small? Why might this matter? Should the electronegativity difference of the the atoms bonded to one another be larger or small? Why might this matter? Give two or three examples of molecules where you might expect the intermolecular forces to be very small
Explanation / Answer
A:- Examples for compounds has low boiling point and high vapour pressure => CH4 (methane), C2H6 (ethane), NH3 (ammonia). These compounds has very small intermolecular forces between the molecules, molecular size and mass of these compounds small. The electronegativity difference between the bonded elemental atoms of these compound very small (no dipole-dipole interactions), hence they shows small intermolecular forces (non-polar).
