organometallic chemistry~~~!
7. For the substitution reaction M LEX Y which goes to completion, the rate was studied under conditions of large excess of ligand Y a) How can one determine the order of the reaction in MLSX from a single kinetics run. b) Assuming the reaction is first order in MLsX, one obtains a plot as shown below. kobs rite the general form of the rate law for substitution and express the constants in terms of the slope and/or intercept. What does this rate law imply about the reaction?Explanation / Answer
For the given organimetallic reaction.
a) One can determine the order of the reaction by a single run. With large excess of Y, the rate of reaction wold be independent of concentration of Y. The reaction goes to comletion, so the rate is dependent only upon the concentration of one substrate ML5X. Thus the order or reaction here is first order.
b) For the first order reaction graph shown above,
equation,
k(obs) = k[Y]
With plot of k(obs) vs [Y] giving a straight line, slope = k
The rate law suggests the reaction is a pseudo-first order in kinetics.
