Question

Review the Belize media and discuss with your colleagues the challenges and successes with water quality or scarcity in developing countries as well as more developed countries. Some things you may consider as you discuss this topic: What are the most significant public health issues for water in developing countries? How do those issues differ from those in a developed country? What are some real examples of these issues and what is being done to overcome them? As Belize and other countries build their infrastructure, what can or should they incorporate into their development to retain a healthy water supply? How do socio-ecological factors influence educational interventions and solutions to water related problems?

Explanation / Answer

Belize, a small country in Central America that shares a border with Mexico and Guatemala, is known for its lush rainforests and Mayan ruins.Water resource issues and problems in developing countries present special challenges. Problems include the natural scarcity of drinking-water in certain areas, floods, the siltation of river systems, as well as the contamination of rivers and large dams. These problems are more severe and widespread in the developing countries due to their long standing exploitation by the world's richness, industrialized ones. Some 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to clean water. 2.6 billion lack access to sanitation. 1.8 million children die each year from diarrhea and millions of women spend hours a day collecting water.

The lack of access to and availability of clean water and sanitation has had devastating effects on many aspects of daily life. Areas without adequate supplies of freshwater and basic sanitation carry the highest burdens of disease which disproportionately impact children under five years of age. Lack of these basic necessities also influences the work burden, safety, education, and equity of women. While poverty has been a major barrier to gaining access to clean drinking water and sanitation in many parts of the developing world, access to and the availability of clean water is a prerequisite to the sustainable growth and development of communities around the world.

Developed countries has more water and it is being wasted in comparison to developin countries who have little water and poor sanitation facilities.Major death under 5 years is common in developin country due to poor quality of water.Whereas wastge of water is a common consequence of extra water present in developed countries.

In order to conserve our water resources first of all self awareness is neccessary as an aware person will know the importance of saving water. For awareness education is neccessary and for education governance is neccessary. For proper governance population should be low.

From the point of view of interventions, the literature suggests that people do not easily change and sustain new behaviors as intended. Mothers do not necessarily have sufficient decision-making power within their homes to take effective action and community resources need to be tapped by water treatment programs to facilitate the development of water treatment as a social norm. The findings show that a consumer-centred approach to water treatment is necessary to understand the range of issues properly and to find effective solutions. Surprisingly, the literature revealed that water treatment is not always perceived to have health benefits. Diarrhea is not always seen as a significant health threat and water treatment and storage are sometimes not done adequately enough to reduce the incidence of disease.

The two most important challenges are to find new ways to promote water treatment that does not rely solely on a promise of reduced diarrheal disease and to address safe drinking-water as a multifactorial problem that includes strategies to change the entire cluster of behaviors related to diarrhea as well as hygiene and sanitation technology.
