Question
A solution of a pharmaceutical (P) and ethanol (E) is fed to a mixer, where it is combined with water (W) at 80 oC. This mixture of P/E/W is then fed to a settler, where the mixture is cooled to 4 oC. Most of the P leaves solution as a solid, where it is fed out of the settler with a small amount of E and W. Most of the E and W leave the settler as a separate liquid stream. How many possible system boundaries are available around which you may calculate degrees of freedom?
SIde Note: I thought the answer was 2 but that was incorrect.
Explanation / Answer
The flow sheet is shown below. There are 3 system boundaries
One ; Across the mixer, second across the settler and third overall
since there are two components, three independent equations will have to be written.
