Question
Last year Penn State recycled 77 tons of aluminum cans and prevented them from going to the landfill. a. Diesel fuel has an average chemical formula of C_12H_23 and a density of 6.45 lb/gal. Calculate how many lbs of CO_2 are produced per gallon of diesel burned (assume complete combustion). b. The landfill is 70 miles away while the recycling center is 7 miles away. Assume that a 10 ton diesel garbage truck gets 2.8 mpg when full and 4 mpg when empty. How many lbs of CO_2 are saved in transportation alone by recycling the cans? Assume the recycling truck and the garbage truck get the same mpg and that both trucks return empty. c. The production of aluminum (for cans) requires 13 kWh/kg of aluminum while producing aluminum from recycled cans requires 0.65 kWhr/kg. I low many lbs of CO_2 are saved per year in manufacturing from PSU recycling? Assume that 80% of the energy comes from coal (2.1 lb CO_2/kWhr) and 20% from natural gas (1.3 lb CO_2/kWhr). (1 metric ton - 1000 kg).Explanation / Answer
I'm gonna help you with part a) only this time, cause I have a doubt in b) and c) and cannot get a correct answer, so post b and c in another question thread ok?
The combustion of diesel reaction:
C12H23 + 71/2O2 --------> 12CO2 + 23/2H2O
so let's calculate the moles:
mass = 6.45 lb * 454.4 g = 2930.88 g
moles = 2930.88 / (12*12 + 23) = 17.55 moles
1 mol of dielsel produce 12 moles of CO2 so:
moles CO2 = 12 * 17.55 = 210.6 moles
mass CO2 = 210.6 * 44 = 9266.4 g
mass in lb = 9266.4 g / 454.4 g/lb = 20.39 lb/gal
Hope this helps
