Question
A Lewis structure for Dihydroxyacetone is given below. It is an organic molecule that can be classified as both a ketone and an alcohol (or more accurately a diol). Dihydroxyacetone is the active browning agent in sunless tanning lotions, and its phosphorylated form is found in the glycolysis metabolic pathway. Use the give Lewis structure to answer the following questions. What is the empirical formula of Dihydroxyacetone? Polarity: Determine whether each of the following bonds is polar or non-polar. Hybridization: Determine the hybridization of each atom. Geometry: Determine the molecular geometry around each atom.Explanation / Answer
a) emperical formual is obtained by adding all atoms in given structure we have C3H6O3 its emperical formula
b) Polarity depends on electronegative differnece between two atoms in bond , C-C , O-O bonds are non polar
hence O1-C2 is polar
C2-C3 bond is non polar
C3-O4 bond is polar
c) for hybridisation we find steric number ,
steric number = number of sigma bonds around atom + number of lone pairs ,
steric number 2 is sp , steric number 3 is sp2 , steric number 4 is sp3
now steric number for O1 = 2+2 = 4 , hence sp3 hybridised
steric number for C2 is = 4+0 = 4 hence sp3
steri cnumber of C3 = 3+ 0 = 3 hence sp2
d) to find Molecular geometry for specific hybridised atom we use VESPER table
O1 is sp3 hybridised with 2 lone pairs hence its V shape
C2 is sp3 with no lone pair and hence tetrahdral
C3 is sp2 hybridised with no lone pair hence its trigonal planar
C2
