Question
A. If the current atmospheric pressure was 29.45" of Hg, what is the pressure of dry hydrogen in the buret? Show your work. You collect a sample of hydrogen gas in an inverted buret by displacement of water at 23 °C. The buret c in the buret was 14.65 cm above the water level in the water bath. The volume of gas in the buret ould not be submerged deep enough in the water bath to equalize pressure. The water level was determined to be 32.60 mL a. If the current atmospheric pressure was 29.45" of Hg, what is the pressure of dry hydrogen in the buret? Show your work.Explanation / Answer
If the levels were equal : pressure of gas in burette = pressure of atmosphere
If the level in burette is higher:
pressure of gas in burette + pressure of liq. water = pressure of atmosphere
Solve this equation for pressure of gas:
pressure of gas in burette = pressure of atmosphere - pressure of liq. water.
atmospheric pressure was 29.45" of Hg
But Hg is 13.6 times as dense as water, so to convert from 146.5 mm (14.65cm) of water we have to divide by 13.6
pressure of liq. water = 146.5 mm water x (1 mm Hg/13.6 mm water)
= 146.5 mm water x (0.0735 Hg)
= 10.77 mmHg
pressure of gas in burette = pressure of atmosphere - pressure of liq. water.
= 29.45 mm Hg - 10.77 mmHg
= 18.67 mmHg
