Question
A nomograph, below, is used to estimate one of three variables when the other two are known. For example, the boiling point of a liquid at I atmosphere, 760 mm Mg. can be estimated if a published boiling point at another pressure is known. The three variables connect with a straight line through the three curves A, B, and C, Use a ruler to answer the following question: What is the expected boiling point in an open (P hint) melting capillary of stearic acid. CH_3(CH_2)_16 CO_2H, a fatty acid, (it actually is a solid at room temp) when the literature has its bp = 183-184 degree C at 1 mm Hg? What is the expected boiling point of a liquid at a pressure of 0.05 mm Hg if it boils at 400 degree C at 760 mm Hg (1 atm) pressure?Explanation / Answer
All of this exercise, you just need to use a ruler between the T given, and the pressure given. That's all what you need and doing this, my results are the following:
For the first data, my ruler crossed in 400 °C, and for the second data, around 120-130 °C
Hope this helps
