Explanation / Answer

Ch-11

part b) 1 Pa = 0.0075 mm of Hg

So 325 KPa = 2437.5 mm of Hg

A)

Let x moles of Ethane be added to sample container.

Total Pressure = 1.05 atm

V = 1 L

T = 250C = 298 K

total moles (n) = x+(1.45/40) = x + 0.03625

PV = nRT

1.05 = (x + 0.03625) x 0.0821 x 298

x = 0.0067

So PAr V = 0.03625 x 0.0821 x 298 = 0.88 atm

Pethane V = 0.0067x 0.0821 x 298 = 0.16 atm

Part B) Oxygen-nitrogen problem

Let total mass of mixture be 100g

Mass of nitrogen = 36.8 gm, So moles of N2 = 1.31

Mass of Oxygen = 63.2 gm, So moles of O2 = 1.975

XN2 = 0.4 & XO2 = 0.6

So PO2/PN2 = nO2/nN2

PN2 = PO2 x 1.5

PT = PN2 x XN2 + PO2 x  XO2 = PO2 (1.5XN2 + XO2)

PO2 = 254.16 mm of Hg
