Question

I need help trying to figure out how to find the molarity of Na2C2O4. I've been trying to solve it but I don't know how to since i don't know the weight of my unknown. What I have is this: Average concentration of KMnO4: 0.016385
Na2C2O4 Unknown buret KMnO4 buret
Run 1: final reading-29.82 mL 31.56 mL Initial reading-1.19 mL 4.20 mL
Initial reading-3.20 mL 2.46 mL
Run 3: final reading-28.93mL 39.29 mL Initial reading-3.08mL 2.98 mL Run 3: final reading-28.93mL 39.29 mL Initial reading-3.08mL 2.98 mL I need help on how to start the problem. Please and I appreciate it. Thanks

Explanation / Answer

I need help trying to figure out how to find the molarity of Na2C2O4. I've been trying to solve it but I don't know how to since i don't know the weight of my unknown. What I have is this:

Average concentration of KMnO4: 0.016385 M

Na2C2O4 Unknown buret KMnO4 buret

Run 1: final reading-29.82 mL 31.56 mL

Initial reading-1.19 mL 4.20 mL

Volume 28.63 ml                          27.36 ml

The reaction between MnO4- and C2O4^2- is as follows:

5(C2O4)^2- + 2(MnO4)^- + 16H^+ ---> + 2Mn2+ + 10CO2 + 8H2O

Here 5 moles of sodium oxalate react with 2 moles of potassium permanganate .

First calculate the moles of MnO4- as follows:

0.016385 M* 0.02736 L= 4.48*10^-4 Mno4-

Now number of C2O42-:

4.48*10^-4 Mno4-* 5 mol C2O42-/2 mol MnO4-=1.12*10^-3 Mol C2O42-

Molarity = moles / volume in L

= 1.12*10^-3 Mol C2O42-/0.02863

=0.039 M

Run 2: final reading-28.81mL 27.86 mL

Initial reading-3.20 mL 2.46 mL

Volume 25.61 ml                          25.4 ml

The reaction between MnO4- and C2O4^2- is as follows:

5(C2O4)^2- + 2(MnO4)^- + 16H^+ ---> + 2Mn2+ + 10CO2 + 8H2O

Here 5 moles of sodium oxalate react with 2 moles of potassium permanganate .

First calculate the moles of MnO4- as follows:

0.016385 M* 0.0254L= 4.16*10^-4 Mno4-

Now number of C2O42-:

4.16*10^-4 Mno4-* 5 mol C2O42-/2 mol MnO4-=1.04*10^-3 Mol C2O42-

Molarity = moles / volume in L

= 1.04*10^-3 Mol C2O42-/0.02561

=0.041M

Run 3: final reading-28.93mL 39.29 mL

Initial reading-3.08mL 2.98 Ml

Volume 25.85 ml                         36.31 ml

The reaction between MnO4- and C2O4^2- is as follows:

5(C2O4)^2- + 2(MnO4)^- + 16H^+ ---> + 2Mn2+ + 10CO2 + 8H2O

Here 5 moles of sodium oxalate react with 2 moles of potassium permanganate .

First calculate the moles of MnO4- as follows:

0.016385 M* 0.03631L= 5.95*10^-4 Mno4-

Now number of C2O42-:

5.95*10^-4 Mno4-* 5 mol C2O42-/2 mol MnO4-=1.48*10^-3 Mol C2O42-

Molarity = moles / volume in L

= 1.48*10^-3 Mol C2O42-/0.02585

=0.058M
