Pharinet, the author of the essay, has discussed about the important aspects about the college education in today’s society in this essay. She describes that it is not possible for every boy or girl to attend college, as expected by everybody in the modern society. There are various reasons he has given but most important is mainly due to financial constraint and also cause of lack of interest in studies. To manage finances while studying without any family backup is quite a hectic task by an individual while managing his day-to-day personal and educational expenses. To attend a college many students also apply for student loan, but it is also given upon the basis of high school grades. There are certain entrance exams like ACT and SAT also are considered to meet the college credentials. The author wonders why all these are needed if everyone can attend college and has the right to education. Instead of attending college Pharinet has emphasized to learn several other professional courses and programs which can help to attain subsidiary income. Many argue that a college degree plays a crucial role in the success and well-being of not only an individual but also the entire nation. However, many others believe that higher education can be a waste of time and money for many unwilling people who are not ready to take up the challenges of a college education. With her appeals to logic, use of rhetorical questions and strategies throughout her posting, Pharinet tries to tell everybody and makes a straightforward claim that not everyone should attend college just for the sake of it.
Since World War II number of universities have been steadily increasing. Public policies have made higher education more reachable for example, by creating federal student loan programs, so that many gets the chance to go to college. But the author thinks that the most common issue is that the students are not yet ready to face both the academic and financial challenges. The author discusses the various financial problems that many students face simply attending just one semester of college. To keep up with the financial responsibility of college debt, most students have to work. He states that eventually unable to cope up with the pressure, the students become part time academics and eventually many drops from the college. Then the author tells us that she thinks college is not for everyone because, often there is no desire for learning, people just get admitted to college to earn a fancy degree and get into a job with decent pay. According to the author, these very people will be inefficient in their jobs as they would have no other motivation other than earning money. She makes it clear to her audience that she is not against post-secondary education but also, she does want to prove her claim that this type of education may not be the right route for every individual to take. With her use of a shocking statistic, she does support her claim that half of the students who starts college in US, does not finish it. Clearly he or she should not have started their higher education in the first place if they did not intend to finish it. Society pushes today's youth towards higher education. The goal of grade school is to prepare the students for middle school. The goal of middle school is to prepare the students for high school. And finally the goal of high school is to prepare the students for college. The entire structure of education is to prepare youth for the next level of education but the problem with this system is that not all students are college material, as discussed in the essay. Society instills today's youth with the notion that without a college education they will not be a successful person. But then again is money the only thing that defines success. Success is a wide-ranging term that has different meanings to different people. Some people believe that making money defines success, while others believe that success is having a loving family. Still, society seems to demonstrate and even promote that success is portrayed by making money only. The general public states that in order to be a successful person one must gain a high salaried job out of college. Pharinet argues that the encouragement to go to college has actually turned into a high pressure situation that pushes students who are not ready for college into a very expensive commitment they are not ready for. The author claims that motivation is low among these students and that the dropout rate are very high.
There are many decent paying jobs beyond and like mechanics, factory workers, tailors and carpenters that do not require a four-year degree. Also, many police departments and fire departments do not require a four-year degree. An individual can also make a good living in the hospitality sector, medical or web design/IT profession without a four-year degree. The US is a country based on freedom and individualism. The author wants to make everyone understand that, to ignore students’ different learning styles and abilities and pressure them into going to college is unfair and also ignores their individuality.
