Question

Based on your observations while blowing into a beaker, write down a chemical reaction that explains the pH change. What is produced as a result of blowing into a container of water? How would this affect the pH of the solution? ( lab question from lab Examination of Buffer Solutions & Indicators)

The color of water changed from bright orange-yellow to orange-pink. pH from 7.46 to 5.56. However, I think the solution is supposed to be more basic instead of acidic like the result show. Why is it so?

Explanation / Answer

When we blow air into a beaker of water, we are pushing CO2 into the system. The CO2 reacts with water to form carbonic acid, a weak acid which dissociates into HCO3- and H+. The solution turn more acidic accoridng to this reaction. The solutionm would not be basic unless we have blown air fof longer periods of time at which CO2 concentration would change the pH to basic.
