Question
Cyclopentadiene (C_5H_6) reacts with itself to form dicyclopentadiene (C_10H_12). A 0.0400 M solution of C_5H_6 is monitored as a function of time as the reaction proceeds. The following data was recorded. Use the appropriate plot of concentration vs. time to determine the order of the reaction with respect to C_5H_6. Include all plotted data in the report. Based on the plotted data, the reaction is (zero, first, second, choose one) with respect to C_5H_6. Determine the rate constant for the reaction.Explanation / Answer
b)
try for second order reaction.
Ao = initial concentration= 0.040 M
At = after time t concentration
suppose at 50 sec At = 0.03M and at 100 sec At = 0.024 M
k = 1/t [1/At - 1/Ao]
k = 1/50 [1/0.03- 1/0.04]
k = 0.167 M-1s-1
rate constant = k = 0.167 M-1s-1
similarly try at 100 sec
k = 1/100 [1/0024 - 1/0.04]
k = 0.167 M-1s-1
so
rate constant = k = 0.167 M-1s-1
c)
use above equation.
now time = 350 sec
0.167 = 1/350 [1 / At - 1/0.04]
At = 0.012 M
concentration fo C5H6 after 350 sec = 0.012 M
note : for part a
please try to plot a graph in between 1 /At verses time
1 / At means at 50 sec , 1/ 0.03
at 100sec , 1/ 0.024
at 150 sec , 1/ 0.02
at 200 sec , 1/0.0174
