Question
Cyclopentadiene and cyclohexanone are combined in a reactor and undergo an addition reaction. The adduct can either have an endo or exo conformation. For the application yourn plant has, only the endo conformation is desired. The selectivity of the reaction is 150. The yield is 0.9. The reactants are fed to the reactor at a rate of 400 mol/hour each.
a) How many moles of the endo conformer are present in the effluent?
b) How many moles of the exo conformer are present in the effluent?
c) How many moles of unreacted cyclohexanone and cyclopentadiene are present in the effluent?
Explanation / Answer
a)
Cyclopentadiene + cyclohexanone = => endo + exo
now yield = moles of desired / moles of desired for complee conversion
hence 0.9 = moles of endo/400
moles of endo = 360
b) now
selectivity = moles of desired/ moles of undesired
150 = 360/moles of exo
moles of exo = 2.4 moles
c)
total moles of cyclohexane reacted = (360+2.4)= 362.4
moles of unreacted cyclohexanone = 400-362.4 =37.6
similarly
moles of unreacted cyclopentadiene are = 400-362.4 = 37.6
