Question
Two cubic containers (seen in the figure below) contain the same quantity of gas at the same temperature. Which cube contains gas with more entropy? If the sample on the right below is left unchanged, but the sample on the left below is cooled so that it condenses, which sample has the higher entropy? Identify the processes as spontaneous or nonspontaneous: A photovoltaic cell in a solar panel producing electricity Helium gas escapes from a latex party balloon A sample of pitchblende (uranium ore) emits alpha particles Sodium chloride (NaCl) forms a solution with place in a sample of water. Ice cubes melt in a glass of lemonade, cooling the lemonade from 10.0 degree C to 0.0 degree C. If ice cubes are the system, what are the signs of Delta S_sys and Delta S_surr? Which of the following combinations of entropy changes for a process are mathematical possible? Delta S_sys > 0, Delta S_surr > 0, Delta S_univ > 0 Delta S_sysExplanation / Answer
16 )
sample on the right (smaller one) more entropy . it is due to decreasing in volume occupied by the molecules . in the condensation molecules becomes very close to each other . this means randomness decreases . if randomness decreases entropy also decreases. so left one which is cooled has lesser entropy than right one
