Question

This unit presented the development of a series of mathematical models that predict with varying degrees of accuracy the outcome of intraspecific and interspecific competition. One of the most widely used is the Lotka-Volterra model of predator-prey interactions, which uses a logistic growth formula. This model does not explicitly include a term to account for predator-prey adaptations that may lead to coevolution. Considering this and the concepts presented in this unit, propose a response to the following statement:

"Continuous adaptations resulting in the coevolution of predator – prey parings ultimately leads to the extinction of the prey species."

Explain your answer and provide an example supporting your position.

Explanation / Answer

Co-evolution is reciprocal evolution between interacting species driven by natural selection. This co-evolutionary process has responsible for many important events in the diversification of life. The extent of co-evolution depends on the ways in which they interact each other. If continuous co-evolution occurs between the predator and prey then the ultimate extinction of prey species takes place. In evolutionary process, dominant species are flourished compared to others. Because they are more accepted by the nature. In the predator-prey relation, prey gets killed by the predator and during this process the prey gets extinct with time.
